Awards Instituted

Distinguished Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award will be decided by a committee nominated by the EC and awarded at the AIPNA GBM held at the USCAP meeting. Nominations from members will be sought through the newsletter with at least a month’s notice. The nominations should be sent to EC detailing the reasons why the candidate is eligible. The award for a particular year will be deferred if there are no suitable candidates.

The "AIPNA Best Abstract Award" is a cash prize and plaque given at the Annual meeting of the Association of Indian Pathologists in North America, which takes place as a companion society meeting during the annual USCAP meeting. In addition to the first prize award, two additional cash prizes will also be given for the next two abstracts. From the entries submitted, the AIPNA Best Abstract Award recognizes outstanding research by a pathology resident or fellow that she / he is presenting at the USCAP meeting. The process for submitting entries for the award, criteria for eligibility, and selection are as follows:

Eligibility:

  1. All persons currently enrolled as full time trainees in an accredited graduate medical education (GME) training program in their country will be eligible to enter.
  2. The submitted abstracts should have an eligible pathology trainee as the first author / presenting author and the abstract must be accepted for presentation at the corresponding USCAP meeting.
  3. It is not required that the trainee or the senior author is a member of AIPNA, although we encourage the trainees to become junior members of AIPNA and get involved in the association’s work.
  4. The senior author on the abstract will confirm the eligibility of the submitting trainee (current enrollment and very high level and substantial participation in the research).

Process of Submission:

  1. A call for abstracts will be announced in AIPNA newsletter and website in January. It will provide the email address and contact information for submission.
  2. The authors will submit at a minimum the abstract accepted by USCAP. They may submit additional material (such as a copy of their poster) at their discretion, but it is not required.
  3. The submission can be done any time after the authors receive the acceptance from USCAP for poster or platform presentation.
  4. The deadline for submission will be one week before the beginning of the USCAP meeting.
  5. There is no submission fee.

Selection process and criteria:

  1. The abstracts will be reviewed and graded independently by three judges, who are pathologist members of AIPNA.
  2. The research described in the abstract will be judged for
    • Size and scope of the work.
    • Originality of idea for research.
    • Use of novel/ cutting-edge technology or innovation appropriate for resource poor settings.
    • Research conducted on patients in India or which provides avenues for improving pathology practice in India is encouraged
    • Clinical relevance.

Award ceremony:

  • The awards will be announced at the annual general body meeting (GBM) and dinner of AIPNA, which takes place in the evening on the Sunday or Monday of USCAP meeting.
  • All pathology trainees are encouraged to attend the GBM and receive their award in person.

The Friend of AIPNA award is given to a pathologist who has exemplified the spirit of AIPNA in his other work. The individual's work must have AIPNA, furthering its cause. Previous recipients of this award have been Indian Pathologists who have spoken at AIPNA international CMEs or have helped co-ordinate workshops and lectures of AIPNA faculty at their institutions.

The Life Time Achievement Award is given to a senior pathologist who is well recognized in his or her field and has made a significant contribution to the practice of pathology and has impacted the practice of Pathology.
The individual can be from any part of the world and should have served AIPNA over at least ten years contributing to its development and activities in an outstanding manner.

He or she should have served AIPNA over at least 5 years and contributed to improving the activities of AIPNA far beyond just being a member. They should also have helped broaden the bandwidth and prestige of AIPNA, or have successfully carried out an important and impactful project for AIPNA.
